David
Wilding-Davies explains what sets
Ashanti Coffee apart from other
specialty coffees:
“Most other
specialty coffee leaves the farm gate
and passes through a lot of hands before
it reaches the cup - from grower to a
local broker, then an exporter, a
shipper, an importer, a green broker, a
roaster, a retailer and finally the
consumer. What’s special about this
coffee is that we grew it on our own
farm, imported it ourselves, and we
roast it fresh right here in Collingwood
- we have control of it from farm to
finished product, and it results in a
brilliant cup of coffee.”

To give you an idea what we’re all
about, here’s an excerpt from a press
release we gave out when we opened our
Collingwood roastery:
David
Wilding-Davies and his wife Amy moved to
Africa 10 years ago to pursue a dream,
buying Ashanti Coffee Estate in the
Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Their
hard work, the rich soils and ideal
coffee growing altitude soon yielded
award winning coffee.
David and
Amy’s philosophy was to grow a great
coffee in harmony with nature and the
local community. Half the farm is left
in its natural state to conserve the
indigenous forest and provide wildlife
habitat for monkeys, small antelope, and
leopards and nearly 400 species of
birds.
The farm
employs and provides housing, nutrition
and educational benefits for two hundred
and fifty permanent workers and their
families, and provides part time
employment at picking time for another
six hundred people.
We take the
social, economic and environmental
aspects of the coffee business
seriously. We use responsible
employment, conservation and
environmental practices on the farm and
throughout the entire production
process.
Ashanti Coffee
Estate has a long standing relationship
with a local African school called
Maundwa Primary. Over the years, the
farm has helped to build and supply
their classrooms with educational
materials to help the rural children.
In Collingwood,
Ashanti Coffee reaches out to its
community by donating coffee to the
local women’s shelter.
We want you to
taste the origins of great coffee, to
understand more about one of the world’s
most largely traded commodities, and to
enjoy a direct relationship with the
land your coffee is grown on, and the
people who grow it.
