Our new soccer fields are being
enjoyed by Collingwood residents,
but they also are a source of
revenue for the community" said
Mayor Terry Geddes
Hundreds of
visiting soccer players got their
first view of Collingwood's new
Fisher Field soccer pitches on
Saturday June 17th and Sunday June
18th, and the response was terrific.
Over 100 teams from all parts of
Southern Ontario participated in the
two-day "Collingwood Classic" open
invitational tournament. "It is
really terrific to see so many
people come to Collingwood to make
use of our new soccer pitches" said
Mayor Terry Geddes, who took in some
early morning action on Saturday.
"Our new soccer fields are being
enjoyed by Collingwood residents,
but they also are a source of
revenue fot the community" Geddes
added. Last weekend, Collingwood
hosted the "Ontario Cup" provincial
qualifier for under 12 and under 18
boys.
"All
events generated what I believe to
be a fabulous family oriented
weekend."
--Peter Dunbar
Director of
Leisure Services Peter Dunbar said
that he was extremely pleased to see
the town host so many events. "It
was just part of a great effort by
volunteers and staff to produce a
huge sports weekend. We had over 400
hundred families at the arena for a
three day tournament which dominated
the downtown core all weekend. The
Clippers poured hundreds more into
the Centennial pool for their annual
swimming meet. Baseball/slow-pitch
played its regular schedules games
and the biggest soccer tournament to
date…..120 teams, what a great
sight! Everywhere I drove kids were
playing sports, and all events
generated what I believe to be a
fabulous family oriented
weekend…great benefits to the
participants and a great impact to
the local economy. Collingwood is
spectacular" Dunbar said.
Collingwood was so busy with
sporting events on the Father's Day
weekend that one out-of-town visitor
said hotel rooms were hard to come
by. With so many visitors in town to
play soccer, the spinoff for local
businesses, especially restaurants,
was very positive.
